Bathroom Restoration
Correcting hidden structural and plumbing issues before rebuilding a modern bathroom designed for long-term performance.
Project Story
Completed in partnership with Country Made Custom in South Carolina, this project originally began as a flooring replacement intended to refresh an aging bathroom.
During demolition, conditions hidden beneath the finished surfaces revealed a much larger story. What initially appeared to be a straightforward renovation evolved into a comprehensive restoration requiring structural repairs, plumbing corrections, and complete reconstruction of the space.
Rather than simply replacing finishes, the project focused on identifying and correcting the underlying causes of the deterioration before rebuilding the bathroom from the structure outward.
The bathroom had experienced months of moisture exposure that was not immediately visible from the surface.
Once demolition began, significant deterioration was discovered within the floor system. The damage extended beyond the finished floor and affected both the subfloor and portions of the supporting framing structure.
Investigation revealed two separate plumbing issues that had contributed to the deterioration over time.
A kinked water line beneath the existing whirlpool tub had developed a pinhole leak, while the toilet flange had been installed too high to allow a proper seal at the base.
Compromised floor joists were removed and replaced where necessary, and new subflooring was installed throughout the affected areas.
These repairs created a stable foundation for the reconstruction before new finish materials were installed.
Plumbing and Reconstruction
With the structure exposed and accessible, the plumbing system was comprehensively updated. Existing supply lines, drain lines, and related plumbing components were removed and replaced to support the new bathroom layout and fixtures.
Additional performance concerns were also discovered within the drainage system. Further evaluation revealed that the toilet lacked proper venting and portions of the drainage line contained obstructions that restricted performance.
A new venting solution was installed, drainage issues were corrected, and the plumbing system was restored to proper operation before reconstruction continued.
Following structural and plumbing improvements, the bathroom was rebuilt with a new bathtub, full tile surround, new vanity, new flooring, drywall installation and finishing, interior painting, updated fixtures, and coordinated finish work.
Custom Storage
Because of the bathroom's limited size, storage became an important consideration during the planning process.
Rather than filling the narrow space beside the bathtub with fixed shelving, a custom pull-out storage cabinet was recommended and constructed to maximize the available area.
The full-height cabinet slides outward, providing access to the entire depth of the storage space while eliminating the accessibility issues often associated with deep shelving.
The solution created dedicated storage for towels, toiletries, and everyday bathroom essentials while transforming an underutilized area into one of the most functional features of the room.
